About the Venues

The Barbican Centre, London, EC2Y: The Barbican Centre is a performing arts centre in the City of London and the largest of its kind in Europe. The Centre hosts classical and contemporary music concerts, theatre performances, film screenings and art exhibitions.

Depot Cinema, Lewes: A state of the art three screen community cinema screening a variety of new releases, documentaries, classics & films for all the family. It takes its name from its site, which was originally a GPO depot and, more recently, a Harvey’s Brewery depot.

The David Lean Cinema, London, CR9: The David Lean Cinema is a small cinema built in Croydon, London, in the 1990s, to honour the director David Lean, who was born in the town. It is located within the Croydon Clocktower arts complex on Katharine Street.

Chelsea Theatre, London, SW10: Chelsea Theatre is a contemporary performance space and community hub which combines artistic excellence and community participation.

Rio Cinema, London, E8: The Rio Cinema is a Grade II listed independent Art Deco cinema in east London. It is a popular single-screen cinema located on Kingsland High Street in Dalston, with a history stretching back over 100 years.

Fabrica, Brighton: Fabrica is a unique venue, a contemporary art gallery based inside a 200 year old former church. A beautiful setting and atmosphere makes it a special setting for film screenings.

Regent Street Cinema, London, W1B: A uniquely historic cinema, the first place in the country to show moving pictures, recently restored and now showing a wide-ranging repertory programme in the heart of London.

Alexandra & Ainsworth Estate, London, NW8: One of London’s most iconic brutalist estates, containing 520 apartments, a community centre, parkland and school.

Cube Microplex, Bristol: The Cube Microplex is a social art experiment existing in the form of a cinema and event venue in central Bristol. It operates as a non-profit cooperative.

Chapel Cinema, London, E2: Based at St. Margaret's House, which has been at the heart of the community since 1889. They take great pride in working to increase access to opportunities and cultural programming through the provision of low-cost and free events, exhibitions, workshops, and classes.

Curzon Clevedon: Unlike many cinemas built in the heyday of early silents and Hollywood, this Grade II listed building has never closed its doors to film-goers. Threatened with closure in 1996, the cinema was saved thanks largely to local support, and now flourishes under the ownership of the community.

Square Chapel Arts Centre, Halifax: A mixed arts venue who programme a mixture of theatre, film, music and comedy, Square Chapel is a Grade 1 listed building who have just opened a £6 million pound extension.

Cinema Saltdean: Cinema Saltdean brings film to audiences who prefer not to have the multiplex experience but nevertheless enjoy a big screen experience.

SOAS, London, WC1H: SOAS, University Of London is the World's leading institution for studying Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Its Students' Union is renowned as the most political SU in the country and has members from over 150 countries worldwide.

Derby QUAD: A comprehensive creative centre with indie cinema, art gallery, cafe-bar and events spaces for hire. It provides facilities and services that connect people and businesses to art and film, creating opportunities for entertainment, education and participation.

Left Bank Cinema, Leeds: Left Bank Cinema is a thought-provoking series of films screened on the last Thursday of each month in an amazing Grade II* listed former church building with a fully stocked licensed bar open throughout the screenings.

The Cinema Museum, London, SE11: Devoted to keeping alive the spirit of cinema from the days before the multiplex. The Cinema Museum houses a unique collection of artefacts, memorabilia and equipment that preserves the history and grandeur of cinema from the 1890s to the present day.

Christ the Saviour Parish Church, London, W5: A beautiful Parish Church in the heart of Ealing Broadway.

Wivenhoe Film Club, Essex: Wivenhoe Film Club is one of the oldest community cinema groups in East Anglia. It screens mostly art-house and world cinema releases in the intimate surroundings of local boat-building museum the Nottage Maritime Institute, located on The Quay at the bottom of the village.

London Shambhala Meditation Centre, London, SW4: Shambhala London is part of a global community inspired by the vision of creating an enlightened society, based on the principles of kindness, fearlessness and basic goodness. They offer training in meditation, Buddhism, arts and communication.

East Bergholt Cinema, Colchester: East Bergholt, the birthplace of the painter, John Constable, is home to a thriving village hall cinema showing foreign, art-house and more mainstream films.

The Flavel, Dartmouth, Devon: A small - but perfectly formed - charitable arts centre, and the placeThe Flavel, Dartmouth, Devondly atmosphere.

The Ultimate Picture Palace, Oxford: Oxford’s oldest and only independent cinema, showing a mix of recent releases from around the world, classic seasons and a programme of exciting one-off events. A historic grade II listed building opened in 1911, it was Oxford's first purpose built cinema.

The Plough Arts Centre, Torrington, Devon: Provides exciting opportunities for all people to experience a wide and vibrant range of high quality arts events both as audience and participants. A welcoming and dynamic venue for artistic expression and education, responsive to the needs of the local community and a beacon for the arts across North Devon - visible and valued throughout the South West.

Pine Grove Pictures, Crowborough, East Sussex: Pine Grove Pictures is Crowborough's community cinema, based at the Community Centre.

Kingston Museum, London, KT1: Kingston Museum holds the Muybridge Collection, including 2,000 glass magic lantern slides and 67 zoopraxiscope discs donated by pioneer motion photographer Eadweard Muybridge, who was born and died in Kingston. There are also displays relating to local archaeology, history, art and craft. There is a full programme of annual exhibitions and events, all of which are free.

Shree Ghanapathy Temple, London, SW19: The first fully consecrated Hindu temple in Europe. Since 1981 it has developed an unparalleled approach to serving the Hindu community in London whilst also contributing and supporting the large local multi-cultural community.

Malmesbury Film Society, Wiltshire: A non-profit volunteer-run organization screening world and classic films for an enjoyable Sunday evening. Non-members are always welcome.

Northern Light Cinema, Wirksworth, Derbyshire: The Northern Light Cinema aims to put the fun back in film, making a trip to the flicks not just about watching great movies but about having a great night out. Tucked away in the old Malthouse on North End, in Wirksworth, the hidden gem of the Peak District.

Filmhouse, Edinburgh: The Filmhouse is Edinburgh's foremost independent cinema, celebrating world cinema in all its brilliance and diversity.

Bernie Grant Arts Centre, London, N15: The centre bears the name of Tottenham’s late legendary black MP Bernie Grant (1944 - 2000), whose vision for a fairer Britain and a fairer world inspired him to embark on creating the space. It is his legacy to showcase and encourage creative and culturally diverse talent based locally, nationally and internationally.

Hippodrome Cinema, Bo'ness: The beautiful vintage Hippodrome in Bo’ness is Scotland's first purpose-built cinema and the home of the annual Hippodrome Silent Film Festival (www.hippfest.co.uk).

Eden Court Theatre, Inverness: Eden Court is Scotland's largest combined arts venue, showcasing theatre, cinema, arts and education performances for the Highlands & Islands.

SARIC, Syston, Leicestershire: A local charity based at the Old Chapel in Syston. They hire out their premises to groups in the area, keeping their rates as reasonable as possible, and are very passionate about providing a facility for the local community. They enjoy offering the cinema to the locals and long may it continue.

Bewdley Film Club, Worcestershire: Bewdley Film Club, now in its third year, meets once a month to enjoy classic films from around the world and across the era of film-making, from early silents to modern dramas. Our community cinema provides top-quality projection and comfort, and a welcoming cafe-bar.

The Egerton Film Society, Kent: The Egerton Film Society meets at the Egerton Millennium Hall, Egerton, and has been screening films each month since 2001.

Long Crendon Film Club, Buckinghamshire: A community cinema screening the very best in British, International and Classic cinema, with the screenings also serving as social events for the village to enjoy. A project of Long Crendon Community Library, all profit made by Long Crendon Film Club go towards helping keep the library open.

Filmbox Community Cinema, London, BR3: A fortnightly community cinema for grown-ups founded in September 2012, FILMBOX brings a diverse world of film to the Beckenham & Bromley area - open to all. Showing films on a big screen with a great audience as the film-makers intended.

The Institute of Light, London, E8: Hackney’s newest collaborative space – a one-stop cultural hub set in an enigmatic railway arch and intimate courtyard. IOL works as a multi-sensory space; a repertory cinema; vinyl record store; film, music and photography bookshop, and social cafe.

Acton Film Club, London, W3: Screens a film every three weeks, each preceded by a short introduction from Nick Jones. They show silent films, world cinema, contemporary and classic British and American pictures and cult movies.

Andover Film Club, Hampshire: Andover Film Club are a volunteer-run group who screen films at their local ODEON on the second Monday of the month, September to July. The club's aim is to bring films to the community that might not otherwise be shown in the town.

Tufnellpark Film Club, London, NW5: Great movies every Tuesday! The twist is that every two weeks the film is linked to the one screened a fortnight before.

Pitshanger Pictures, London, W5: Exists to inform, entertain and strengthen community in North Ealing by screening films that stimulate conversation and discussion on questions in life.

HOME, Manchester: A centre for international contemporary art, theatre and film, HOME is for curiosity seekers, for lovers of the dramatic, the digital and the deeply engaging; for radicals and reciprocators. Head to HOME to discover new art, new experiences and new stories, from across the world. Everyone is welcome.

The Fleapit Cinema Club, Westerham, Kent: The Fleapit, now planning its 21st season, is one of the largest stand-alone clubs in the UK. The UK Independent Film Festival (UKIFF) is run and curated by The Fleapit Cinema Club. It was set up to bring genuinely independent UK films to a wider audience.

The Horsebridge Centre, Whitstable, Kent: The Horsebridge Arts and Community Centre is located in the heart of Whitstable on a site which has a long tradition of community and cultural activity. Since its launch in April 2004, the Horsebridge has established itself as a quality venue at the heart of arts, social, learning and leisure activities in Whitstable and the wider north east Kent area.

Southwark Cathedral, London, SE1: Originally dating from 606, both ancient and modern, Southwark Cathedral lies on the south bank of the River Thames in the diverse, vibrant and exciting Bankside area where arts are celebrated and all are welcome.
